Rant 431 / Moar Youtube

Just when the final book in my wishlist, The Wyrmling Horde, is restocked another book goes out of stock. This time it's Swann's Way, the latest translation by Penguin Books. This version is supposedly more noob-friendly because it contains footnotes that explain references that modern readers may not understand. Also, it's done by seven translators and an editor, so the language can't be bad or archaic.

I've read that some translations were done in somewhat archaic English, making them sound less smooth. Some are worse because they're done by translating a version of the work that itself was translated from the original text. It's like running an essay through Babel Fish from French to Japanese then to English, but slightly better.

Infinite possibilities indeed.

A recent trial gives hope for an AIDS vaccine. Scientists have no idea why it works because it's basically a cocktail of failed drugs. Even stranger is that once a vaccinated person is infected, he gets the same effects from the HIV as anyone else. Usually vaccines would slow down the progress of a virus even if it fails to prevent the illness.

16000 people were tested, 125 people were infected (70+ from placebo group, 50+ from vaccinated group). No one was deliberately infected, so there is no need to feel remorse. As I understand it, the 16000 people were most likely unaware of what they were being tested for.

However, I thought it would be a more accurate study if the volunteers were deliberately infected. 70+ vs 50+ people really doesn't look very conclusive to me. Luck and probability may have a hand in making the difference too. But if they were all injected with HIV, there would be no doubt whatsoever about the results, and you wouldn't need that many volunteers. They could probably just use criminals on death row - those who volunteer would be pardoned. Dying within the decade has to be better than dying next week.

Plus this really isn't a bad thing if you would just look at the big picture.

30-36 million people got infected with HIV in 2007 alone. 1.9-2.4 million died that year. Given that the numbers are actually rising over the years, we can safely assume that we will have at least 2 million AIDS-induced deaths this year alone.

Thus even if we deliberately infect 16000 with HIV, it's nothing! It's not even 0.1% of the minimum infection rate of 2007! It's like adding 1 more troll into 4chan, like me typing yet another rant on something you don't care about. The difference in the end result is going to be the negligible: over 2 million would still die of AIDS this year, 4chan would still be the No.1 troll-haven and my blog would still be full of crap no one gives a damn about.

Better still, the scientists would benefit by getting solid, undeniable results that would raise no doubt.

"The contest is a forum where women are used by companies to popularize and sell their products," said Manu Humagain, head of an anti-pageant Maoist panel. "It is a blow to the dignity of the women. We oppose it."

Yes! How dare they pay women to walk on the stage half-naked! How dare they pay the women attractive rewards to strut on the international stage, and again, half-naked! This is wrong! Women should not be allowed to display their beauty in public! It's a blow to their dignity! All Nepalist women should be banned from wearing makeup and be forced at gun-point (if necessary) to wear the burqa! Only then will they be truly dignified!

Those evil, male-chauvinistic, capitalistic beauty products companies! Someone needs to burn them all to ashes!

Holy shit! An almost flawless 4-in-1 song!

It fits!

I never thought mashups could sound good till today.

What the hell are you waiting for?

Getting better as you go down the list?

No more good mashups, but...

WITNESS THE GENIUS OF BEETHOVEN!

The Moonlight Sonata was actually written for a woman he loved but couldn't marry because he was a commoner and she was a countess.

No one really knows who this Elise is. There are theories but no solid evidence. All we can know for sure is that she must have been hot. Beethoven didn't just compose music for every woman he meets.

He was almost completely deaf by 1818 (to the point that he used conversation books to communicate with other people), but completed the Ninth Symphony in 1824. Beware, both parts are 32mins long. If you don't recognize what you're hearing at the beginning, fast forward to 11:00 in Part 2. That is near where Ode to Joy begins.

The best composer and the best conductor. If only these two videos have HQ mode too. Oh well, at least Karajan recorded his performance in CD format, so that we can watch it today on Youtube.

Last of all, have some Mozart.

It's entitled "Lick me in the ass".
