Rant 194 / Today Is The Yesterday Of Tomorrow

World of Warcraft tournaments are really horrible to watch. Tried watching one match, which consists of a few 1v1s and a 3v3. Disgustingly boring. Even the commentator was bored to the point that he had to repeat things to pass the time without having an awkward silence. Seriously, 1v1 of a Priest vs a Warlock is just about chasing each other and getting out of each other's line of sight by running behind pillars in circles. For 5 mins, I watched that match hoping something would happen, but all they did was just what I had described in the previous sentence.

Reminded me of the time I played Devil May Cry and Chaos Legion, when the bosses required a serious and intense amount of repeating the same actions with perfect timing. Gets really frustrating if I die and had to do it all over again, but feels just as boring when your mind slowly dies and all there is in your mind is the next button to press when the precise moment arrives. Some people call it "in the zone". It feels good when you're in the zone because you're perfectly calm and every action you perform and all your timing is perfect.

But when you wake up, it would seem so monotonous and, if it was a single-player game, pointless. But if it's a multiplayer game, being in the zone is something every good player needs to do. I always have difficulty doing that though. Only happens occasionally. And at those times, I can be the top fragger of my team, until I see my score and get so happy that I become distracted. Then my score would drop back to the middle again.

See why I call my blogs rants? I digress a lot.

Cycling is good for me because it's almost the same as running but with less impact on the knees. I'd go swimming except that I developed this strong dislike for it after I dislocated my shoulder in a pool.

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG! Averatec-Intel Classic Season 2 is now ON! This is the second season of the Korean Starcraft tournament I was discussing some months back. Right now they're still at the Final 64.

Damn, Boxer is so good, he's playing for the Korean Air Force's Starcraft team, AirForce Ace. DAMN!! If only I could play computer games during my NS! Damn!!

And now they have 2 english-speaking commentators so that things are livelier now.

Watching Boxer vs Hero now...

Boxer lost!! In both games he used risky unorthodox strategies that somehow didn't work. It was entertaining, made everyone wish he'd win just to see more exciting matches that keep everyone guessing what Boxer'd do next. Too bad, he lost. But he'd not be famous if he weren't unorthodox. He's known to be very creative after all, always making his opponents and audiences go "WTF?!?"

In the first game, he sent the 2nd SCV he built (aka very very very early SCV he could have used to collect resources for other early game rushes) to the empty space just north of the enemy Zerg base. The Zerg was completely unaware of his presence. His SCV then began to build a Barracks there when another SCV comes along and got a 2nd Barracks up. 2 Barracks above enemy base can only be a rush.

It was an intensive early bunker rush! With 3 Marines and the 2 SCVs ready, he sent them right to the enemy expansion base slightly south of the two Barracks before it had any defenses and before any Zerglings were ready.

As soon as Hero saw the small group of Terrans, he sent 2 drones to mutate into Sunken Colonies (Zerg turrets) immediately.

The 2 SCVs did not slow down. Instead they began to build a bunker right next to the Hatchery. The Marines behind covered them while more Marines arrived from the two Barracks.

Alas, the Zerglings were actually halfway done, made just a few seconds ago to prepare for a standard early Zerg raid. So 4 Zerglings ran to the Terrans and began to rape the SCVs while the Marines desperately shot at them. But that was not enough, because when the Zerglings reached the SCVs, 3 out of the 4 went for the Marines, forcing them to move back to dodge the attacks.

At that point, 2 out of the 5 Marines present died. The building SCV soon followed, but not before completing the Bunker. The surviving SCV began to repair the Bunker as the more Zerglings arrived to assault the Bunker. Everyone was screaming in the studio as the desperate rush for the Bunker began.

The 3 living ran for the Bunker and ignored the Zerglings that were chasing them. 2 more died in the run. Finally, the last SCV and the Marine got into the Bunker just before they died (both HPs were in red).

Just a few seconds later, the Sunken Colonies were done. The Bunker rush was too late. 2 Sunken Colonies and almost 10 Zerglings easily overwhelmed the Bunker. As a last ditch effort to save the situation, the SCV exited the Bunker to repair it, only to die in a blink of an eye.

Boom! The Bunker exploded, leaving the last Marine exposed to all the fury that the Zergs could muster. The rest of the Marines arrived too late to enter the Bunker, because from the desperate run to the death of that last Marine, they took less than 30 seconds. And so, the frontmost Marines died while the rest ran towards Boxer's main base instead, because the Zerglings were already running towards it.

Zerglings always run faster than Marines. Plus, with the failed rush, his economy was shattered beyond salvation. All the resources that could have been spent to build more SCVs and expansions were instead used to build more Marines to save the Bunker. So even though the first wave of Zerglings eventually died, his base was seriously damaged and many of his precious SCVs died.

With his teching one step behind Hero's, whose economy was not seriously damaged, Boxer lost when he was unable to fight off the Mutalisk( basic Zerg flying units) raids that came later.

In the second game, he actually tried using Valkyries, which are aircrafts that can only kill air units. This strategy is supposed to use Valkyries to kill enemy Overlords to reduce their Food count and severely limit his opponent's unit count. Unfortunately, when he sent his Valkyries out, Hero got his Scourges out. Scourges are the suicide anti-air bombers. GG.

And yea, they have girls in there too. Just that they generally aren't too good at the game. No idea why. Will watch some games played by girls and find out.

Woohoo! Got a new set of headphones. Just a cheap $20 set. Feels pretty solid, but only time will tell if its good.

Spent $165.70 last week. About $65 for the visit to NUH. About $10 for the refreshments for TMC because I didn't get a receipt for the plastic cups and paper plates (took lots of cookies and a bottle of drink back to hall as compensation.. and bought a packet of Fisherman's Friend in the same receipt as the food without anyone's knowledge). So.. where did the 90 bucks go? About $40 for taxi fares, $20 for EZLink. $30 left. I'll assume I spent $25 on food. $5 left. Okay this error is small enough. All accounted for.

Whoa! If anyone reading this is going to watch the 2nd season of the Averatec-Intel Classic, watch the 3-game set of IntoTheRainbow vs AzAng here, here and here. Their styles are weird, especially Rainbow's persistent use of Reavers. I'm not saying he suck at it; on the contrary, he's freaking good at using them. There are times when he managed to kill 5 SCVs with 1 shot. It takes a sharp eye to pick out which SCV to aim for. Then his Shuttle zooms in just before the enemy units can shoot at it. Extreme micro skills.

I discovered that Trance music is a great genre for those times when you're just walking alone. Now I have about 500 mb of Tiesto's 3 albums in my phone. That's about an hour and a half of non-stop Trance. Great stuff when I'm walking from my hall to class. And not so fantastic that I can't stop listening to it. Easy to pick up, easy to drop.

Was looking at this picture of what the stars out there are like, as seen by the Hubble telescope. I'm pretty amazed by what I didn't know, especially about the scale of things. Our Solar System, unimaginably large as it is, is in fact microscopic when compared with certain stars. Here is the pic. Click on it for an enlarged version.

This may be old, but I've never seen it before. Size does matter! In comparison to the binary stars at the bottom, Earth is no more than an atom. Makes you wonder if the quarks are really the smallest particles.

Yesterday, the Pope made some comments about the economic crisis, saying that we who work towards career, money and success are "building houses on sand," a quote from the Bible, and that only the words of God are "solid reality". Wow, this guy is seriously conservative. I've already read about him being a very conservative guy back when they nominated him to be the Pope, but this opened my eyes.

One comment that someone made on that website I linked to was pretty true.

And how much is the Vatican worth again? How many billions does it have invested in this "castle built on sand"? The words Black, Pot and Kettle come to mind.
Let us prey. Amen.
