Rant 321 / Shorty

Whales are such ironic creatures - the world's largest organism that feeds on some of the world's smallest. I've always wondered how they get enough food to survive, given that they probably need lots of energy to move, stay warm and maintain bodily functions. But krills and planktons are so tiny, and how can it be that there are so much of them in the freezing waters of the polar regions, as compared to the warmer seas of the tropics?

Evident that in life, logic isn't necessary.

On the 10th of March, some guy shot fifteen people in Alabama, USA. Yea, whatever.

On the 11th of March, some guy shot ten people in Winnenden, Germany. Yea, whatever.

On the 7th of March, some guy shot two other guys in Antrim, North Ireland. Fail.

On the 8th of March, some guy blew up thirty-three people and injured fifty-seven others in Baghdad, Iraq. Damn, those Arabs are good at this business.

Blue Mars is turning out to be so depressing near the end. As the First Hundred, the very first settlers on Mars began to die of age-related conditions, each of them begin to experience memory problems that their anti-aging treatments aren't solving. Most of them were about 200-220 years old, and their problems were mostly mental.

The most tragic scene was when Maya, during the reunion cum funeral of one of the First Hundred, stared at a photo of young Frank and could not recall anything about him. "What an interesting face," she said. Frank Chalmer was one of the two men she loved most in her life.

Reminds me of the old couple who used to live in one of the units on my floor. Really old, with hair all white, probably 70-80 years old. They looked physically fit still, and go brisk walking together every morning. But each time my family encounter them while waiting for the lift, the old lady would have to remind her husband who we were. The old guy would smile, probably aware that he was having memory problems but didn't want to make a big fuss.

Just like the way Maya responded when everybody stared at her when she said that. Some even had tears in their eyes. Everyone knew of her love affairs with Frank Chalmer and John Boone. When she saw their reactions, she knew something was very wrong, so she quickly left the house that was built and decorated just like the home she used to live in during her younger days (though she no longer recognized that).
