THU
Tried to stream Towns but can't. At first, the game's graphics went haywire when it loaded after Procaster (Livestream's broadcasting programme) was loaded.
Solved that by opening Procaster after Towns, but the stream looked horrible when I checked an hour into my stream.
Looks like that's impossible for now.
My tax assessment notice from the tax collectors IRAS came with a negative 4-digit number. Yep, looks about right.
Speaking of low income, I ran out of rice today. Only had slightly more than a single cup so my bro went out for dinner with his gf. I didn't have enough food for three anyway, only a packet of fishcakes and a packet of chikuwa.
Had enough to make an anchovy and cabbage soup with those stuff.
Skipped the rice because this was enough for one. Still have another two soup bowls' worth of soup and a serving of fishcake and chikuwa.
Tomorrow I'm all out of food other than half a loaf of bread, some chicken franks and breakfast ham.
It's either wake up early to go to the market or visit Shop N Save, except I try to keep my visits at the latter on Saturdays when my Visa debit has 3% cashback for all transactions there.
I also have some pasta, a jar of pasta sauce, canned food and instant noodles, but I try to avoid the last two and for the first, I have nothing to add to the sauce.
Looks like if I ever visit the market this week, I'm going to need to bring the trolley.
Ok, I'll admit that the above was meant to be misleading. No lies, just incomplete truths.
Some inspectors who claimed to be from the Ministry of Manpower visited my office today when I wasn't around. Apparently it was some sort of an advisory thing and I won't be penalised for any offence, so I let them do it. The guy on the phone mentioned he was going to take photos, so I had to make sure nothing was going to be made available to the public.
Thought it was fine, then I realized later in the evening that I didn't and couldn't check his credentials.
My workers couldn't anyway since they're illiterate.
That was a retarded mistake. Should have said no.
FRI
Ugh. I left the soup to cool in the reusable plastic containers and then forgot to put them in the fridge later.
The uncovered one had a thin white layer on top. The rest tasted slightly off.
Strangely, they also tasted as if I didn't add any salt. Do those bacteria consume the salt?
SAT
Went to the market and supermarket this morning at 7.30am. Both were pretty packed.
They weren't when we first arrived but the pork stall had a long queue. By the time I bought the pork and chicken the whole market was crowded.
Actually I could have chosen a stall with a shorter queue but it made sense to go for the stall with the longest queue when I knew nothing about any of the four.
Why would all the middle-aged women and their maids queue up for this particular one when there are three others with far shorter queues, sometimes even none?
Either it's cheap or it's fresh and trustworthy. From what I can tell, those are the two factors they focus on.
As for the chicken stall, there was no queue but that was because everyone was leaving after making their orders, then returning later to get them.
The vegetable stalls were packed as usual. Thought I could find some kangkong this time but it was nowhere to be seen. Also wanted to buy some eggs but they were too fragile and I thought we would barely be able to hold everything even without it.
My bro and I went together because we were buying rice. I always get him to go with me when I'm planning to buy that because these days, I only buy 10kg-packs.
Speaking of rice, I should probably stop buying Songhe exclusively and try another brand. Now that I'm getting used to the prices of rice, I realized that it is one of the most expensive brands around.
Today, it was S$28 for 10kg. Not really worth it especially when nobody here is a connoisseur or anything. I could have bought two 5kg-packs of the supermarket's own brand of rice for like $10 each. The other day I even saw New Moon's 10kg-packs going at $20.
So anyways, the pork was S$22 for 2kg of minced pork. I asked for half-lean half-fatty, ground once. I thought since I'm mostly doing stir-fry dishes I should get something with more texture or whatever that quality is called. If it's ground twice it becomes too smooth.
The chicken took some time but there was only one chicken stall in the market. The good thing was that I could tell them (it was operated by a couple) how I wanted them prepared. The two things are:
1) whether I wanted the bones removed, and if I wanted the bones at all.
2) whether I wanted the skins removed, and if I wanted the skins.
They sell the bones separately and once I saw someone asking for the bones of the chickens bought by the customer in front of her. Not sure how much it goes but for my order, it was $20 for 10 chickens' worth of deboned breasts with the skin still on, and the bones were packed separately. I wanted the bones for soup.
Speaking of soup, I'm going to have to buy a piece of pork for it. Soup made from nothing but bones (whether chicken or pig) tastes like it lacks something to me, and that something is the flavour of pork ( or beef or mutton, but pork is the cheapest).
Fish was simple since I know jack shit about all of them. I only bought a large piece of salmon fillet (near tail end) and a strip of this fish they use for fish soup outside. $20 for both. Asked him to slice the fish for me but the fishmonger doesn't provide this service for the salmon since all the fillets were pre-packed into little plastic bags.
Salmon's always easy, so much so it's just like convenience food to me. The only major difference between salmon fillets and instant noodles IMO is that salmon only lasts a week, maybe slightly more, in the freezer.
I only have three methods of preparing salmon. If it's fresh, sashimi. I rarely do that because I rarely have fresh salmon when I'm in the mood to cook. By "fresh" I mean the fish must be bought yesterday at most.
If it's not fresh, which is usually the case, I either bake (ie grill) or fry it.
Bake is the easiest. I rinse it, place it on a piece of aluminium foil with the skin facing down, sprinkle salt, pepper and chopped garlic, and wrap it up so that the splattering oil won't go everywhere. Next I can leave it to marinate in the fridge till I'm hungry or I could just put it on a grill and leave it in the oven at about 200 degrees Celsius for 20-30mins.
20mins if it's not too bad and it's already thawed to room temperature.
If the flesh is already coming apart before it's even cooked, it's not fresh (IIRC). I use 30mins if this happens or if it's still cold.
Next was vegetables. As I said, I wanted kangkong. I didn't have anything else in mind and thought I'd just see what they have. In the end, I got some mushrooms, two kinds of cabbages, a $2-box of butterhead lettuce and some spring onion.
Spring onion's hard to find later in the day, even in the 24-hour supermarket, and I need it for my fish dish using the other fish I bought.
It's easy to stir-fry that with ginger and spring onion, but usually I don't add enough ginger so it tastes as if I only cooked it with the spring onion. Did it like twice over the last few months before my bro mentioned it. Personally I didn't really need too much ginger, only enough to remove the fishy smell from the dish. More was fine, but I'm too cheap to use more ginger than was necessary.
And fish cooks so quickly that it doesn't take more than five minutes, excluding the chopping and rinsing of all the ingredients.
Also bought coffee. I think it was Indonesian beans, but I don't know. All I said was I wanted something to make black coffee with and I didn't want a mix because I don't know how. So she pointed at one and my mind was like "Whatever" and I said ok.
$13 per kg. I bought 800g, split into two bags. Not sure how long this will last me TBH. I use two tablespoon for each cup of coffee, but my ceramic cup is rather large.
While she was grinding it with her machine I went to the stall next to hers for some vermicilli, another convenient food.
Rice vermicilli is kinda tricky but still convenient. I have yet to find out how I can cook it without having it all sticking to the pan, other than by using a non-stick pan/wok.
It's convenient because all I have to do is soak it in warm water or boil it slightly, and then I can either put it in soup or stir-fry it with soy sauce.
Finally, I went to the supermarket. My bro waited outside with the full trolley while I shopped inside. Discovered that "calrose rice" isn't the kind that I normally eat and so I couldn't use the coupon I brought. In the end I just stuck with my usual Songhe rice, but like I said, I'll think about buying another brand next time.
Also bought some pasta sauce with a coupon. The tomato-based sauce should work with the minced pork I just bought... which reminds me that I had forgotten about tomatoes and onions.
Derp.
Maybe next time.
Also bought some milk and bread. Nett was about $50. Saved a total of $1.10 with the coupons, and a further 3% for using my debit card there on a Saturday. 3% of $50 is $1.50, so total savings would be $2.60. That's like 5% discount total.
I know it's a pittance but it's the feel, or the psychological effect, of saving money that matters. If saving money was really important I wouldn't have bought that brand of rice.
Now the receipt says I have almost 500 points, and the recent edition of the Passion newsletter announced that all those points are expiring by 30 June for all members.
Time to redeem. 150 points for a dollar, so that's $3 there, and I estimate that there will be about 100 points wasted.
And that's how such points, and even gift vouchers, work.
Of course that's not the end. I had to spend some time to split up the pork and chicken breasts I bought. In fact I asked both vendors to give me some of their little plastic bags just for this purpose.
It's not funny when you have 10, or even 5, chicken breasts frozen into one giant chunk. Takes forever to thaw. Fortunately the bones were already split into two bags, so that saved me some time.
Sub-title that's supposed to make me look smart and witty.

Rant 993 / Incomplete Tales
Believe it or not, I used to have a legit boxed copy of Diablo 1 back in the day. Everything about it was so new then, I didn't even know what "Free Battlenet" meant and thought it came with free internet.
Of course that part didn't work out, and I didn't like the game.
Diablo II was much more fun, and I was entering an age where I began to like such excitement when it was released.
Still, I'm not going to pre-order Diablo III. I don't see it as a game that I would keep playing often enough to make it worth the money.
Fallout 3 and FNV, on the other hand, gave me more than I paid for.
Killing Floor too.
Console contracts?
A 360 with Kinect for US$99 with a 2-year contract of US$15 monthly.
The future of console gaming!
TBH, I wouldn't mind, except they're already developing the 720 so 2 years may be a bit too long.
In any case, I'm too cheap to buy console games, making it pointless for me to even consider buying a console at all.
EA announces low profits in the fourth quarter (July-September) because it sucks.
Profits announced: 400 million nett
Cost of making and marketing the TORtanic alone: over 150 million.
It's true this is a much larger number than the 151 million they got in the same quarter last year, but the difference lies in the fact that they had just released the costliest game in human history.
Which makes "TORtanic" such an apt name.
And did I mention they lost over a million subscribers since its release 5 months ago? They had announced sales of over 2.3 million copies and they're at 1.1 million subscribers currently.
Anyway, as a result of the announcement, EA shares dropped 10% ($1.49) to $13.64 per share immediately that day.
It then recovered back to $15.13 per share at closing before dropping another 5% to $14.38 in after-hours trading when it predicted losses of about 45 cents per share in the next quarter.
Despite all the bad news, EA is still kind of safe to invest in as far as I can tell. As much as I dislike their business practices from a gamer's point of view, its profit level is undeniably moving in an upward direction, generally speaking.
Yet who knows? This could very well be the end of the line for it. I wouldn't bet on it though. EA may not be great at making games, but they have some good businesspeople in there.
Just ordered about 8 cardigan samples, most of them men's. Feels like part of the weight has just lifted off my shoulders.
I also realized why my office is so packed even though I'm grossing better than my mum did for March and April. My jackets aren't moving rapidly enough, and they're bulkier than everything else.
I suck at jackets.
But in my defense, men's jackets are fcking boring here in Singapore!
A Ph.D on welfare impossible? In the US it is.
Ms. Bruninga-Matteau always wanted to teach. She started working as an adjunct in graduate school. This semester she is working 20 hours each week, prepping, teaching, advising, and grading papers for two courses at Yavapai, a community college with campuses in Chino Valley, Clarkdale, Prescott, Prescott Valley, and Sedona. Her take-home pay is $900 a month, of which $750 goes to rent. Each week, she spends $40 on gas to get her to the campus; she lives 43 miles away, where housing is cheaper.
Yep. Ph.D and professor.
Actually, having a Ph.D isn't really that huge of a deal in terms of income even in places other than the US.
For example,
In Canada 80% of postdocs earn $38,600 or less per year before tax—the average salary of a construction worker.
This is from a 2010 article from The Economist, so it's not outdated data.
The problem is that there are too many Ph.Ds in the developed countries, and it's scary.
Warlock: Master of the Arcane looks good.
The worst thing to happen to me in Fallout: New Vegas just occured.
I always try to visit the Gun Runners shop outside of New Vegas everyday to find the Anti-Materiel Rifle, and today, I found it.
In addition, the Light Machine Gun and its corresponding mods, and the Marksman Carbine were also available at the Vendortron.
So I bought the Anti-Materiel Rifle and thought I'd save it right after so that I could buy the Marksman Carbine after to try, then reload if it wasn't as useful as the Assault Carbine that I was using. The DPS was slightly lower but each round was dealing almost twice the damage, so I needed to know if the scope's accuracy to make the judgement.
As for the Light Machine Gun, IIRC it had terrible accuracy, almost as if I was using a machine gun without deploying it, so I usually ignore it.
Anyway I went through the list completely and bought everything that I want with the 18k caps I was holding, and then I hit A to accept.
It crashed.
IT FRICKIN CRASHED!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!
Good thing I had saved just before I bought anything... except the list had reset again when I reloaded. It's randomly generated each time I reload apparently.
None of the three guns were available after that.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU
I think the pure awesomeness of the Anti-Materiel Rifle overloaded my PC.
They aren't appearing for the following 3 reloads. I'm reloading it until I find my Anti-Materiel Rifle again >:(
It appeared again on the fifth try but it crashed again.
Something's wrong, and it is likely to be the rifle. I had bought the Marksman Carbine and test it before buying the rifle and it was fine.
Seventh time, bought again, was fine, crashed when I hit Tab to look at the Pipboy to equip it.
Ninth time, bought the Marksman Carbine, all the boxes of casings, primers and relevant ammo before hitting F5 for a quicksave. When I hit A for the final transaction after that for the rifle, it crashed.
It really is the pure awesomeness of this gun that's crashing my PC.
They weren't the people I thought I knew; they are the people I have no respect for.
I cling on too hard to the concept of justice, living as I do in a world where there is too little of it.
There is no "we", only I.

Rant 992 / Overwhelmed By Options, Underwhelmed By Motivation
The number of followers of this blog is now in double digits.
IIRC there were only 9 before the slight jump in traffic recently.
It's strange IMO because in May 2010 when the traffic hit an average of over 250 pageviews per day (I think it peaked at about 600 at one point) and not a single person followed this blog, yet now it's only hit 150 and 2 followed.
However, the fact remains that this blog is possibly the saddest one on the Internet - almost a thousand published posts, over 10 followers, an average traffic of 100 pageviews a day, 36 published comments of which 8 are my own.
Once again, this is proof of what I'd said a long time ago: a prolific writer does not a good writer make.
I have mixed feelings about this. After all, it's already number 992. I'd expect something more to happen than what I'm seeing.
On the other hand, I like having a low profile. This is the internet - being high profile means attracting a whole lot more undesirable attention than being high profile in real life, particularly in regards to comments, both legit and spam.
Besides, I'm aware that I've typed lots of things that are either wrong or just plain stupid and I'm not going to correct anything more than a few weeks old. If this blog gets more visitors, I'm going to get more dumbasses telling me I've got this and that mistaken.
I know or I don't care. Either way, those mistakes stay. That's part of the purpose of this blog - to record who I was.
Sentimental reasons.
I wonder if there are people who think I have an awesome life.
It may be true I'm living in paradise compared to people living in the slums of developing nations, but there's no such thing as a life without problems.
I have to admit I'm most likely depressed.
Seriously, I have nothing to live for. My bro's doing fine with his girlfriend, and he's going to be a husband (and eventually a father) soon. He will find a way to take care of himself one way or another, if he hasn't already.
I have no parents, no relatives I actually care for. I'm quite literally "anti-social", and not the kind who simply avoids parties. I'm fully aware I've become rather abrasive since my mother's condition became serious, and I'm not about to apologize for anything.
Whatever I've said or done over the months, they may have been callous but I know I was right on all occasions. It's always been a stupid idea to argue against me and since nobody has convinced me that I'm wrong, I'd say that all the arguments I've been involved in are just evidences that back this theory.
The only thing I live for right now is the business, and honestly speaking, no one else will miss it if it dies. So what if I succeed? Who's going to be proud of it? Only myself. I will be the only person who acknowledges this achievement, if it is ever achieved. It would be like a masterpiece that nobody ever sees, or a famous musician performing in the streets incognito - it doesn't matter.
Let's face it. If I die today, I won't be missed. Nobody will even notice that I've stopped all online activities for months or years, except for anyone actually following this blog, and even if such people exist, they won't be able to do anything about it because all comments are invisible until I've personally approved of them, and few visitors know my real identity.
In fact, if I die today, someone's going to be very happy from all the money he/she is getting from it.
Moreover, I don't have to live up to anyone's expectations anymore.
What am I still doing here?

Rant 991 / Baby Steps
There's really nothing much I can discuss today, so I visited Imgur and threw in stuff that I found.
The EA indie bundle is out on Steam.
>EA

They're really willing to do anything for money, aren't they?
A Queen's Blade MMO?
What?
Queen's Blade was just an fan service anime, kinda like High School of the Dead but with less zombies, less panties and more boobies.
I'm just curious because there are few reasons to make a MMO filled with skimpily-cladded ladies (it's a female-characters-only game too) when there are NUDE MODS for most popular games anyway.
Why bother?
Modders for games like Fallout 3 have even gone one step further and made sex mods.
Fan service for games don't mean much these days except for the initial impact, and MMOs don't really rely so much on that for their revenues.
In Soviet Russia, zoos visit you!
When you're a basketball celebrity, you won't even have to pick your own nose anymore.
Anytime. Anywhere.
For the first time I've made something original. Just a sweater but I think it's going to be too expensive. Too much workmanship required.
Also trying a wool mix I've never used before just to experiment.
This time, if this mix does what I think it does, it's going to be fun.
Now for jackets.
Maybe tomorrow.

Rant 990 / Ten Away From The Thousandth
Best gaming tip that was never given.
Now thinking about the inevitable Shanghai trip near the end of the year.
Absolutely nothing has been set in stone but I have three options available.
First, I can go alone just like last year. It was simple and exciting, but only because it was the first time I visited a foreign place alone where people spoke a language I speak with a different accent.
Second, I can ask an uncle who offered to bring me around when I go on a business trip in Shanghai since he goes there every month himself, also for business purposes.
Third, I can ask a friend from my NS unit who gets sent there regularly by his company.
What to choose?
Personally I favour the first because it's simple and I can do as I wish... which is nothing but work, eat and sleep.
Yet I'm also curious about what I can learn if someone who knows that city better than I do can guide me around, particularly my uncle. I like his way of doing things and TBH I'm actually trying to emulate him in some ways.
I guess that's what people do when they don't have a father.
As for the third option, it could serve the purpose of improving my relations with everyone else in my platoon via this friend because I rarely have the opportunity to interact with them due to my role in the company.
Heck, I barely know any of their names at all. Gets kinda awkward when I ask for a specific name and the guy right in front of me acknowledges. It was alright in the beginning but now it's already past our first in-camp training. The fact is that I know all my company's officers better than the guys in my platoon and this doesn't feel right to me.
I'm thinking about it now even though it's only May because I might get better prices by booking early. Currently the cheapest I can get for a flight-cum-hotel package is just over S$700 nett and this is for the same hotel I stayed the last time.
I like the Bund Riverside Hotel but it's not one that you should bring your family to. It's just a business hotel - no frills, nothing, but cheap. Breakfast is bad, so the 104 CNY isn't really worth it other than for the convenience.
S$719 is cheaper than what I paid the last time IIRC and this time both flights are direct 4.5-hour journeys.
But this is only for three days. I should probably try five days this time.
Oh damn it's S$918. $200 for 2 more days!
Interesting. I can get $100 off for picking a midnight flight, but it will turn a 5-day trip into a 4-day one. Then again, 4 days are probably enough.
Except for the $100 off I will be arriving in Shanghai at 5am.
Very, very bad.
The reverse, where I get a normal flight to Shanghai and a midnight flight arriving at 5am in Singapore, doesn't come with this discount.
Sucks balls.
If I arrive in Shanghai at 5am, I'll get to the hotel at 6am. I can probably get them to hold my luggage for me and I can start walking immediately but... 6am in the Shanghainese winter?
Not sure if want.
It might be a good idea to consult my uncle then.
Free-to-play is the future?
I'm not sure about that.
“You’re either an indie game or you’re a massive AAA, IP-backed sequel with derivative gameplay that’s rehashed over and over again as it’s the only safe bet you can make when you’re spending hundreds of millions of dollars.
“The failure is that there’s no middle ground. All the games in the middle that could have been made but have been squeezed out and we’ve seen all these independent studios get closed down over the last few years.”
Unfortunately that appears to be the result of the circumstances surround the video games industry.
But he has a point. The big publishers are mainly focusing on sequels and rehashes. They make relatively few original games and some aren't even trying to make quality games anymore.
Yet saying that free-to-play is the only path might be stretching things a bit IMO. You could possibly have a system where most original games are produced by indie developers and the successful ones get bought up by the bigger players like what EA does, except the sequels are actually good.
I know, it's just a dream.
Also, consoles dying? Possibly, except consoles today aren't just for gaming. They have already begun to adapt via social media so the issue is what more they are going to put into consoles that will set them apart from computers.
As for portable consoles dying, that I can definitely see. Smartphones and tablets already have the potential to kill them since they have better processing power these days that will become comparable to new portable consoles, if it hasn't already. Throw in all the other things tablets can do and it's a simple slam dunk case.
An Elder Scrolls MMO in Skyrim set a millenium before the other Elder Scrolls game named after that place is going to be made.
I wonder why they are going to make a MMO, of all things.

Rant 989 / Windows 7 And Xbox Now Banned In Germany
Seriously, Germany banned them.
Speaking of Motorola, I didn't know anyone was buying their phones anymore until recently when my bro bought it.
I had totally forgotten about that brand.
Now this headline should resurrect it and give it some hype.
Oh Blizzard.
Instead of trying to stop the sale of ingame items for real money like all other companies do, they're now legalising it and charging money, either the ingame one or the real thing, for each transaction.
They're planning only to accept a few currencies at launch: USD, MXN, BRL, ARS, CLP, AUD, GBP, EUR and RUB. For those of us here in Asia, "no real-money auction house available at launch".
For the gold (ingame currency) auction house, the seller will be charged 15% of the final selling price.
For the real-money auction house, 1USD or 1AUD per item.
Transfer fee is 15% of amount being transferred, and this is applied to money you're transferring from your Blizzard account to your Paypal account.
For items that aren't weapons, armours or accessories, it's simply 15% of the final selling price for everything in either gold or cash.
The pattern is so obvious here; anyone can see the business strategy of Blizzard now, even people like myself.
While EA's seems to be to buy up popular franchises, spend most of the budget on overhyping the shitty sequel they make with the rest of the money, then making a fortune from pre-orders, Blizzard focuses more on the long-term.
I think they got a taste of it from the success of WoW and got addicted, so now they're trying to recreate the sustained revenue that WoW used to provide them with.
Everyone knows WoW has been dying for a long time - the very act of remaking the entire world in Cataclysm was like CPR to the game. The question is whether Blizzard can recreate the magic in time.
SC2 was one of the things they couldn't adapt to such a business model, so they tried to make it a major e-sport, and gave it an obscene price tag and a harsh punishment for cheating. This implies that they weren't planning to adapt it initially, probably because WoW wasn't dying back then.
Now it looks like Diablo III is going to do the job of replacing WoW. I'm pretty sure once it's out and appears to be successful, they will stop trying so hard to get people back into WoW like they did with the free Diablo III deal. Of course there's no such thing as too much money, so if they find it worth the investment they will still try to sell WoW.
If they had such an idea back in Diablo II, they would have already made a fortune just because of the Stone of Jordan ring, among other things.
Finally remembered to record my games for the autopilot.
Missed recording my most successful run in Tropico 3 when my popularity hit 54% and my money was staying above 100k.
Too bad I then raised the wage leve of the uneducated too quickly and drained my economy. I can probably still save it but I'll leave it for tomorrow.
It's strange though. I only have over 70 unemployed in a population of over 900 and my citizens are already getting pissed off enough to start leaving the island.
As for the recording, it's just a long run that consists of my journey to Nipton where I killed the legionnaires and Vulpes after three tries.
It was on Hardcore mode, so the absence of an instantaneous heal really makes combat difficult.
On the whole I'd say the video wasn't very interesting though because half of it was me looting everything.
Recycled my trash on Monday. Sembcorp usually gives out these thin green plastic bags for it which they collect every fortnight.
They took a pot I burnt some time ago, my old army uniforms and some other trash, but they didn't take my old pillow.
:(
I still haven't packed my mum's stuff. Somehow I just can't start.
I already have most of her clothes piled onto her bed, so now I just need to remove the hangers and dump them all into the recycling bag. And some other stuff, like her cupboards and whatever.
What should I do with her makeup stuff? I don't think I can recycle them, so I'll most likely just throw them away.
I've also been collecting all my paper trash in that bag. I used to keep all those brochures and flyers to reuse them for whatever, but I've been getting way more than I need.
As for glass jars, plastic bottles and beverage cans, they need to be washed before I dump them inside so it will depend on whether I'm in the mood to do it.
Fleece jackets. I think I shall get some fleece jackets. Men's of course. I already have two ladies jackets that contain fleece.
Motorola Mobility has been granted an injunction against the distribution of key Microsoft products in Germany.
Rant 988 / The Worst Thing You Can Do To Someone Is To Refuse To Correct Him When He Is Wrong
I've just went through the first call with a telemarketer in which I didn't have to lie.
Telemarketer: Hi, this is XXXX from XXXXXXXX. May I speak with your director?
Me: Sorry he's not in.
T: Ok, how may I address you?
M: Mr [ ]
T: Hi, Mr [ ], when can I speak to your director?
M: He won't be around for quite a bit.
T: Ok, so can I have his mobile number?
T: Sorry, I can't give you his number.
I feel so nice and warm inside for being so honest to people. A director that does not exist will always be absent; he isn't around and will not be in the foreseeable future; a non-existent person cannot have a mobile number, legally speaking.
In contrast, this is what I usually do without being impolite:
(Outside walking, shopping or whatever)
T: Hi, is this [company name]?
M: Yes.
T: Hi, I'm from XXXXX. Can I speak with you for a minute?
M: Sorry, I'm in a meeting right now.
(Me hoping he can't hear the noise from the foodcourt/hawker centre/etc through the phone)
T: Ok, sorry to disturb you. Bye.
I know lots of people just hang up on them, but I had a few friends who worked part time as a telemarketer before, so these days I tend to be slightly nicer to them.
So what do Saudi Arabian tourists in Ireland do?
Lots of people think that philosophy is useless.
Indeed, after years of dwelling on it, I have to admit there have been times when I thought that it's just a waste of time.
It is, of course, not true.
The main issue here is practicality.
For most people, practicality means quick, visible effects.
Like I've once said before, what we call "practicality" is just a form of partial blindness, the kind that makes the victim see only what can be seen directly with the eyes.
To me, the main benefit of knowing and thinking about philosophy is to give purpose to one's life.
It is like religion, which can be seen as a ready-made combination of several things including a set of philosophies.
What makes it seem useless is that some have already found a purpose while others don't even realize they need one.
Humans are generally curious creatures, hence it's obvious many of us would be curious about why we do what we do and why we are what we are.
It's the almighty "Why?", the question that never ends.
The unfortunate thing is that thinking about the whys take a lot of effort for most of us, effort that could be used instead for our more basic needs.
It is our instincts overcoming our conscious mind.
We are born with the desire to be the best, yet we don't know why.
Aristotle figured out a thousand years before me that everything we do is for happiness, but does it really end here?
What if I pose this question "Why do we want to be happy?"
Because it makes us feel good?
Then why do we want to feel good?
It is far simpler to listen to the voice that leads us from the beginning than the one we created.
We are sheeps to our instincts.
Alternatively, there is an easier way, a compromise of sort - religion. It's like pre-cooked dinner. You just have to pay attention to it for a short while and you have the result of lifetimes' worth of philophizing.
That's the obvious benefit.
The catch is that it is not made to suit you specifically, but the masses in general. It's the difference between wearing a custom-tailored shirt and a cheap mass-produced one.
In both cases, most people are fine with the latter. Some have tried to adjust it to suit some groups of people better, like shirts for larger people, but the demand is just too small for most of them.
It's really which you hold more dear - time or the specifics of your purpose.
Conformity is simplicity. Paths have been made, questions have been answered. You just have read and listen for a while, and then you will have all the things you need for the rest of your life.
Sure, there are things you don't agree with, but is it really worth the time to think of the perfect adjustment(s)?
Hence the people who philosophize.
I won't call them all "philosophers". Most of us do it to different degrees, but only those who have figured out something truly original and useful can be philosophers.
The majority of those who think about such things will eventually realize someone's already came up with whatever great ideas they thought of and most likely even written entire books on them.
That's normal, and it's how we know ourselves.
Like many have said before, when it comes to philosophy, one should think on it, form ideas using one's own observations and experiences, and when it is done, read on it.
Chances are, there's already an entire school of thought for it, so it's hard to go wrong to follow the above steps.
It's like learning to walk, then run, and then you put on your mechanical exoskeleton.
